As Southern Region Manager with Facilities First, Amal Bailey oversees our facilities services management and maintenance services for three states. Among her responsibilities, she ensures she empowers every team member to deliver our first-class customer solutions across the education, government and commercial sectors.
With Facilities First since November 2020, Amal has an unwavering commitment to improve workplace practices and encourage growth, through training and support for every team member.
“I currently have state managers, contract managers, operation managers, supervisors and cleaning staff working with me,” she says. “I love every minute of my role here. We have fantastic people, and I particularly enjoy training and watching staff succeed and thrive. It’s their success, but I love being part of that journey.”
Amal’s role requires excellent multitasking skills, and a keen eye for detail, know-how she has acquired over an eclectic career.
‘I actually studied criminal law for a couple of years but decided it wasn’t for me. I’m a transparent person and integrity means a lot to me, and I realised that I might be put in situations that I wasn’t comfortable with. I ended up at Myer Grace Brothers where I worked in security prevention, and I introduced CCTV into Myer in Melbourne, the first retail store to have it nationally.”
After Myer, Amal was a consultant for a few years, before working as a Senior Operations Manager in facilities management for 15 years.
While Amal loves exercise, music and gardening, she spends many hours with family and friends – or pursuing her passion for helping people.
“I really enjoy volunteering and helping different societies in any way I can. I recently organised a dance class to raise funds for a Hodgkin society, and I’ve worked quite a bit with teenagers for Beyond Blue. I love to sit with them and talk. I love to give back in any way that I can.”
“I think I’m really blessed to be where I am,” she adds. “You have one journey so it’s important to make the most of it, do what you love and never think I wish I had done that.”
Amal sees the Facilities First team as a like minded group. “Everyone I’m in contact with, from the frontline staff to the state managers, are really down to earth, good people who really care about what they do.”
“When I started here there had been a gap between managers for a while and there were some challenges but we now have a great working environment. If your staff on the ground are happy, then truly, the sky’s the limit. It’s onwards and upwards for every customer.”
